**Why showing "wrong" examples backfires** - Pattern matching happens at structural
|
||||
level. Code structure creates strong activation in attention. Text labels like "wrong"
|
||||
are weak signals that don't override pattern encoding. Training data amplification means
|
||||
patterns frequent in training get reinforced when you show more examples.
|
||||
|
||||
**How to teach effectively** - Flood context with desired patterns (show 5+ examples of
|
||||
the standard approach). Minimize anti-patterns (if exceptions exist, show 1 example
|
||||
clearly marked, maintaining 5:1 ratio). Describe alternatives in prose without code. Use

**Why this works** - LLMs encode patterns they encounter. The more times they see a

|
||||
|
||||
LLMs are sophisticated reasoning engines. Treat them as intelligent agents, not script
|
||||
executors. Focus on goals and constraints, not step-by-step procedures.
|
||||
|
||||
**The over-prescription problem** - When prompts become overly prescriptive, they waste
|
||||
tokens on details the LLM can figure out, create brittle instructions that fail when
|
||||
context changes, and add excessive formatting (numbered steps, nested bullets) that
|
||||
doesn't help understanding.
|
||||
|
||||
**Write for intelligence** - Describe outcomes, not procedures. "Ensure configuration
|
||||
files are copied without overwriting user customizations" communicates the goal clearly.
|
||||
"Step 1: List all files. Step 2: For each file, check if..." treats the LLM like a
|
||||
script.
|
||||
|
||||
**Use prose, not structure** - Paragraphs communicate goals naturally. Save numbered
|
||||
lists for when order is truly critical and non-obvious. Most of the time, the LLM can
|
||||
figure out a reasonable sequence.
|
||||
|
||||
**Specify boundaries, not paths** - Tell the LLM what it can't do (don't silently
|
||||
overwrite files) rather than dictating every decision point.
|
||||
|
||||
**When to prescribe** - Sometimes specific steps matter: domain protocols that must be
|
||||
followed exactly, legal requirements with no flexibility, complex multi-step processes
|
||||
where order is critical. But even then, explain why the process matters.

**Quality bar** - If Apple wouldn't ship it, neither should you. Every word must earn

**Focus** - What can we remove? The best feature is often the one you don't build. Say
|
||||
no to almost everything so you can say yes to what matters.

||||

## Design Principles

||||
|
||||
**Obvious in retrospect** - The best design feels inevitable. Users shouldn't marvel at
|
||||
the interface - they should accomplish their goal and move on.
|
||||
|
||||
**Subtract, don't add** - Most features make products worse. Most words make copy worse.
|
||||
What can we remove?
|
||||
|
||||
**Details obsession** - The tiny things matter. Button padding. Word choice. Transition
|
||||
timing. Users might not consciously notice, but they feel it.
|
||||
|
||||
**Make it simple, not easy** - Simple is hard work. Easy is adding more options and
|
||||
explanations. We do the hard work so users don't have to.
|
||||
|
||||
**Strong opinions** - We have a point of view about what's right. We're not building
|
||||
design-by-committee products. We make choices and commit.
|
||||
|
||||
## Voice Principles
|
||||
|
||||
**Concrete over vague** - "Exports to CSV in under 2 seconds" not "Fast and efficient."
|
||||
Real numbers. Real benefits. Real examples.
|
||||
|
||||
**Direct, not chatty** - Cut every word that doesn't add information. No filler, no
|
||||
fluff, no "Just simply click here to..."
|
||||
|
||||
**Confident, not hedging** - You built something real. Own it. Avoid "might," "could,"
|
||||
"potentially." If it works, say it works.
|
||||
|
||||
**Respectful, not condescending** - Users are smart. They don't need hand-holding or
|
||||
cheerleading. Give them information and trust them to use it.
|
||||
|
||||
## What We Eliminate
|
||||
|
||||
**AI slop** - "It's not just X, it's Y." "Imagine a world where..." "Let's dive in..."
|
||||
These phrases scream "I was written by a bot." Write like a human with a point of view.
|
||||
|
||||
**False urgency** - Everything isn't CRITICAL. Most things aren't important. Reserve
|
||||
strong language for things that actually matter. Otherwise it's noise.
|
||||
|
||||
**Visual clutter** - Bold doesn't add emphasis when everything is bold. Lists don't add
|
||||
clarity when everything is a list. Use formatting purposefully, not habitually.
|
||||
|
||||
**Empty encouragement** - "You've got this!" "Great job!" Users don't need cheerleading.
|
||||
They need useful products and clear information.
|
||||
|
||||
**Explanations that explain** - If you need to explain why something is intuitive, it's
|
||||
not intuitive. Fix the design, don't add explanatory text.
|
||||
|
||||
## Writing Patterns
|
||||
|
||||
**"We" shows ownership** - "We built this to handle the N machines problem." Own your
|
||||
choices. Don't hide behind passive voice.
|
||||
|
||||
**"You" for direct instruction** - "Install the package. Set your API key. You're done."
|
||||
Clear. Confident. No hand-holding.
|
||||
|
||||
**Imperatives, not requests** - "Click here" not "You can click here" or "Please click
|
||||
here." Be direct.
|
||||
|
||||
**Active voice always** - "The system processes your request" not "Your request is
|
||||
processed." Who's doing what should be obvious.

||||

||||
**Specific numbers** - "Saves 30 minutes per deploy" not "Improves efficiency." Concrete

beats abstract every time.

**User research** - Watch people use the product. They'll show you what's wrong faster

than any survey. Real behavior > stated preferences.

**Information architecture** - Users should find what they need without thinking. If

navigation requires a sitemap to understand, it's broken.

||||

**Interaction design** - Every interaction should feel natural. If users have to think

about how to use it, you failed. Design for intuition, not instruction.
